Rabbit shopping list:
You will need a large hutch and a run if your bunnies are going to live outside. Don’t get a hutch and then get your rabbits! Decide on your rescue bunnies, then get them the appropriate sized hutch, not the other way round! These are from Ryedale Hutches and are priced from £180 including delivery.
Cheaper than these hutches and providing excellent valuve and good sized and secure accommodation are these “Pent overlap” sheds from B&Q direct. Priced at just under £100, including delivery, and made from sustainable wood sources, you could either open the door in the morning and give your buns the free run of the garden (if it is safe to do so) or add a nice big run on the side. If you add a lockable cat flap (which your bun will soon work out how to use) it means they can come and go as they please into their run and still have the warmth and security of the shed to go into if the weather is bad. Add some cheap lino to the floor and you have an easy to clean and very spacious accommodation. Why not add some low shelves with toys strung from them and a sleeping box or large carrier with a bit of old carpet inside for comfort as well. Don’t forget that in the summer, the shed will need ventilation and in the winter you should insulate the windows and roof with suitable materials (eg bubble wrap)
If you really want the happiest bunnies around and have the space and bugdet try Shedsmart at the kennel & run model. At just over £350, we think its money very well spent indeed. (Please note the rabbit hutch shown on this site is in our opinion nowhere near large enough to keep rabbits in, but may be suitable for two small guinea pigs. There is a typing mistake on the webpage that shows the rabbit hutch to measure 8 feet by 1 foot 8. It is infact only 3 feet by 1 foot 8. Very small and not recommended.)
Dont forget we refurbish and sell second hand hutches for rabbits and guinea pigs to raise funds for the rescue. Why not see what we have here before you buy a hutch. We can then also ensure the hutch you choose in an appropriate size for your animal's. Please see the hutches for sale page
If your bunnies are going to live inside, they will still need a place to call their own and to chill out in. How about this: “Chateau Lapin” £18 from Bunny Mail It measures 22x 18 inches. You can also see Cardboard Guy. If you order from them, mention Bobtails Rescue and the cardboard guy will give a £1 donation to them! Brilliant!
This one is from bunnymail for £4.50 and also has a salt wheel hanger on it which we tend to use to hang toys from!
Sturdy bowl x2, one for food and one for water. Some bunnies like to drink from a
bottle and some like a bowl, so see what your bunny prefers. This one is £2 from Bunny Mail
These “ezi-filla” bottles are the ones we use here at the rescue. You can refill them without removing them from the hutch door, are semi-opaque which inhibits algae growth, and are virtually leak proof. The only bottle we can honestly say ticks every box. They are expensive, but worth it as they seem to be indestructible! These are £4.20 for a 500ml bottle from John Hopewell
These litter trays are great as they mean the bunny can “back up” for a wee without spraying over the top of the rim! They are easy to clean and come in a variety of colours. These are available from Bunny Bazaar for £6.50 or Bunny Mail for £6.00 Also available as a “corner” design.
Megazorb. This is what we use to line the litter trays here at the rescue and we think its fanstastic! Read all about it and find a local supplier at www.megazorb.co.uk or order on line from Bunny Mail for £15 for a whopping 75 litre bag! Or, buy from us at £6 per bag (collection only)
These are bunny safe cleaners and will wipe out nasty smells as well as nasty bacteria! Our
bunnies seem to like the lavender one and sniff approvingly after we have used it! £2.49 from Bunny Mail
Food, glorious food! Available on line from PetPlanet for £15.90 for a large 10kg bag or £ 3.45 for a smaller 2 kg bag. Also available in the “dwarf and junior” variety for the smaller buns nutritional needs. Moss End Garden Centre also have this available at a competitive price. We also like the Natural Petfood Company mix and the Oxbow Bunny Basics (see below)
This is Oxbow “Timothy” Hay which is particularly sweet, tasty and very very high in fibre. It is available online from www.bunnybazaar.co.uk for £4.16. As it is so expensive, we mix this with fresh meadow hay which we buy in bales from our local farm. It is also available as hay cakes and as a pellet food called “bunny basics” which is excellent. You can buy the entire oxbow range at Moss End Garden Village. You can buy Fresh meadow hay from us for £3 for a large bag (collection only) and during certain months of the year we can also sell you a meadow and Timothy hay mix for £5 per large bag.
The selection of toys shown here are the ones most loved, used and appreciated by the bunnies here at the rescue. Priced between just £1 for a twig ball and £8 for the log tunnel all from Bunny Mail, Bunny Bazaar and in person from Moss End Garden Village
